THE National Inter-Club swimming championships for the President’s Cup, held at the Darul Ehsan Aquatic Centre in Shah Alam, were a big success.

The championships, hosted by the Selangor Amateur Swimming Association (SASA), attracted a total 1,488 participants. The number of participants is considered the highest in the competition series.

SASA secretary Helen Chang said they were pleased with the response for the three-day championships.

“A total 44 clubs, including those from Labuan and Sabah, were present for the championships. The participants were aged below 17 and it augurs well for the development of swimming.

“The championships were also a platform for participants to gauge their progress towards next year’s Malaysia Games in Kuantan, Pahang,” Helen said.

Organising chairman Tony Yap said the competition was an indication of the development programmes initiated by the clubs.

“We were surprised by the number of participants. Despite the high turn-out, we were able to accommodate all the participants for the four age groups. The volunteers were also helpful and were prepared to go the extra mile.

“In fact, despite the number of participants, we were able to complete the events as scheduled. We appreciate the co-operation from the participating clubs’ officials,” Tony said.

Shah Alam-based Cili Padi were crowned the overall champions after ammassing 807 points followed by Ikan Bilis Swimming Club (708 points) and Blue Marlin Swimming Club (490 points).

Wong Fu Kang, from Jasa Swimming Club in Johor Baru, was awarded the overall champion in the boys’ category. The youngster, taking part in the 11-12 years age group, won two gold, three silver and two bronze medals. Enroute to his impressive performance, Fu Kang also created two new meet records.

Ikan Bilis Swimming Club’s Tan Rou Yin, 11, was named as the overall champion in the girls’ category. Besides establishing a new meet record, Rou Yin won three gold and three silver medals.

Both Fu Kang and Rou Yin was rewarded with RM200 voucher by Trend Masters.
