A TOW truck operator overcame the setback of a broken fishing line and walked away with the RM30,000 grand prize in the Monsoon Cup 2011 Beach Fishing Competition at Pulau Warisan here yesterday.

Avid angler Roslan Hamzah, 36, from Seberang Jertih, Besut, said he was shocked when he was announced the winner as he had never won anything in all the fishing competitions he had participated in before.

Roslan said he did not think he had a chance when his fishing line broke soon after the competition started at 8am yesterday.

However, the setback did not stop him from landing the winning catch (an ikan duri or catfish) just 15 minutes into the competition.

"I thank God for the windfall. I plan to use the prize money to expand my tow truck business and to save some for my children's education."

Youth and Sports Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohid Mohamed presented the prizes accompanied by T-Best Events Sdn Bhd chairman Tan Sri Sabaruddin Chik and Berita Harian group editor Datuk Mior Kamarul Shahid.

Also present were the New Straits Times Press Bhd and Media Prima Bhd executive director for news Datuk Ahmad A. Talib, Terengganu Youth and Sports director Rosli Yusof and Berita Harian executive bureau chief Abdul Halem Yusoff.

All the top three prizes were won by local anglers. The second prize of RM10,000 went to A. Ghafar Asnawi, 33, while Mohd Salaidin Ibrahim, 24, was the third prize winner. He took home RM5,000.

Apart from the cash prizes, winners were also presented with goods from sponsors UFL Coleman, TCE Tackle, Nestle and Maggi.

More than 1,000 participants from Pahang, Perak, Kelantan, Terengganu, Kuala Lumpur and Kedah took part in the competition which offered cash prizes worth RM58,200.

Apart from the top three winners, cash prizes were also given to 57 other winners with two motorcycles as the top prizes in a lucky draw for the participants.
