Pregnant and injured Asnah Yok Long, being lifted out of the helicopter on arrival at the Police Air Unit’s airbase in Sungai Besi.

THE Police Air Unit's timely effort in transporting an eight-month pregnant Orang Asli from Pahang yesterday saved two lives when she gave birth to a girl in Kuala Lumpur Hospital, two hours later.

The mercy flight crew led by Deputy Superintendent Abdul Rashid Abdul Jamil, assisted by Inspector Mohd Fairuz Jamil and Sergeant Azwan Azimat landed at the Air Unit base in Sungai Besi at 1.20pm, where an ambulance rushed her to hospital immediately.

It is learnt that Asnah Yok Long, 23, was looking for fruits in the jungle near her house in Kampung Labu, Pos Cherong, Kuala Lipis on Thursday when she fell and injured herself. Her screams alerted the villagers, who brought her home.

However, her condition became worse and the villagers contacted the Orang Asli Department in Gombak via a wireless set and the authorities there immediately alerted police, who sent a helicopter to the village.

Police Air Unit Deputy Commander of Operations, Assistant Commissioner S. Sathiya Seelan said this was not the first time they had answered an SOS call.

"Our 'hot-standby' crew are ever-ready for deployment any time of the day. We are fully equipped and always ready to serve. Of late, we have been called to rescue Orang Asli on many occasions," he said.

Asnah's husband Long Mura Busu, 27, accompanied her.
